Motiv: On Dry Land. CONTEXT I have always been fascinated by boats - especially old boats with good textures to photograph. When I travel around the country with my camera I am constantly searching for old abandoned boats by the beach. Yes I want them by the beach where they belong, but when I saw this pictorial boat on Snæfellsnes peninsula I was not located close to the beach and the boat was far from it - on dry land. But I decided to stop nevertheless and see if I possible could make some decent photo of it. And when I saw the sky I knew it would help a lot to make a fine background for the boat and make the composition stronger. THE PICTURE I took this photo with Canon EOS 5D camera and Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM II lens. The settings: Focal length: 16mm, aperture: f/10, shutter speed: 1/250sec, ISO: 160. PROCESSING When working in the photo I decided very early in the process to convert it into black&white - and I think that was the right decision. The environment was kind of colorless anyway, snow partly covering gray earth and the sky was also rather gray. I saw that these situations called for a black and white image in good contrast - so I also increased the contrast a bit in the processing work and cropped it slightly to strengthen the composition. And that’s about it. OUTCOME The outcome is just as you see it. I like how the snowy knolls make a fine waves just like the boat is sailing there on the dry land. One could also imagine that the wooden posts by the sides of the boat are oars and some sailors on board are striving to move on. But they are just memories and the boat is stuck on the same spot and full of stories from the real sea - from old times. HINTS I find it very important to find the stories in the subjects every time if possible. When photographing old things it is good to be conscious about the fact that the subject itself and the environment are full of stories. So the main task should be finding how its best to capture the atmosphere of the stories - the mood inside and all around. And the viewer of the photograph is the best judge if succeeded or not. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION This photo is taken on Snæfellsnes peninsula on the west coast of Iceland, one of the most interesting places for landscape photographers to visit in Iceland.
