Motiv: Inseparables. CONTEXT I love photographing horses and often go out to find some beautiful horses to photograph. In this case I went out to photograph for a challenge where the theme was “partners”. When I thought of the theme I knew right away that I should take photo of two horses; I found these two old friends and spent a great time photographing them on a beautiful day. THE PICTURE I took this photo with Canon EOS 5D camera and Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM II lens. The settings: Focal length: 16mm, aperture: f/7.1, shutter speed: 1/1000sec, ISO: 320. I also used a polarizer filter on the lens. PROCESSING I wanted to have the background in good contrast, so the clouds would stand out from the deep blue sky - and I used layers to achieve that result. I also worked in the colors, especially be decreasing the yellow color in the horses making them more white. In the end I cropped the image a bit. OUTCOME I took several photos of these great horses - some others are also published here on 1x but I like this one the most myself. The weather conditions were very good, the clouds in the sky were beautiful making a fine background, the sun gave a good light and some wind was blowing, moving the horses’ manes and adding to the mood. When I was photographing them it was just like they knew what I was doing because they played with me and posed for me again and again. Just like in this image where these friends look so close and happy. Later I met the owner of the horses and he told me that these two old partners had been friends for a very long time - in fact inseparables. And he told me their names; the one to the left is “Gosi” and the other one is “Bragi” just like me!:-) HINTS When photographing horses in the close I find it very important to give me some time in the start to get closer to them by talking to them for instance, rub them and maybe give them some bread. I try to connect with them in some way; I grew up with animals and know the importance of showing the horses respect and friendship. So when trying to photograph horses it is all about time, connexion to the horses and patience - and the light of course. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION This photo is taken near my hometown Hafnarfjordur Iceland. I was very pleased that it won the challenge it was taken for and I also submitted it to The Digital Camera Poty 2008 where it ended up in second place in the animals category. BIOGRAPHY I am an amateur photographer born in Iceland 1961. Photography has been my favorite hobby for a very long time, ever since I got my first camera when I was 12 years old. I travel a lot which fits well with my love for nature and landscape photography. My photos have been published far and wide and have won prizes in many international photo contests.
